Rooting and acclimatization of micropropagatedHypericum perforatumL. native to Sicily
2017
Hypericum perforatum L. is traditionally used as a medicinal plant because of its different bioactive compounds with documented antidepressant and antiinflammatory activities. Plantlets’ mass production with high content of these secondary metabolites has been enhanced through in vitro culture but the process has often been stopped at the multiplication phase. A study was conducted in order to set up an efficient in vitro rooting and acclimatization protocol of a H. perforatum Sicilian genotype well-adapted to south Mediterranean conditions. Aseptic nodal segments were cultured onto a Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 4.44 µM 6-benzyladenine for multiplication. Microsh…
Faster acquisition of symbiotic partner by common mycorrhizal networks in early plant life stage
2016
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi usually improve plant performance yet our knowledge about their effects on seed germination and early plant establishment is very limited. We performed a factorial greenhouse experiment where the seeds from four low Arctic cooccurring mycorrhizal herbs (Antennaria dioica, Campanula rotundifolia, Sibbaldia procumbens, and Solidago virgaurea) were germinated alone or in the vicinity of an adult Sibbaldia plant with or without AM fungi; given either as spores or being present in a common mycorrhizal network (CMN). Three different AM fungal species were examined to assess species-specific differences in symbiont acquisition rate. Out of the four plant species i…
Seashore paspalum in the Mediterranean transition zone: phenotypic traits of twelve accessions during and after establishment
2017
The use of warm-season turfgrasses is consolidated in the transitional areas of Mediterranean countries and some field trials have provided information on the adaptability of seashore paspalum to Mediterranean environment. Nonetheless, little is known on the performance of the different commercial cultivars of Paspalum vaginatum in this climatic zone. Furthermore, considering the high degree of variability of this species, ecotypes have the potential to supply new plant material with desired turf characteristics. The research aimed at comparing growth characteristics and morphological traits of eight commercial cultivars of seashore paspalum (Platinum, Salam, SeaDwarf, …

This contribution aims to provide some considerations on the complex scenario created as a result of the latest developments in the field of maritime state concessions for tourist…
Relationship between recruitment and mother plant vitality in the alien species Acacia cyclops A. Cunn. ex G. Don
2014
Acacia cyclops is a widespread invader in Mediterranean-climate regions. However, although its naturalization in the Mediterranean Basin dates back only a few years ago, and the invasion process has not been studied hitherto. We investigated seedlings recruitment strategy adopted by A. cyclops in a small island (Lampedusa, Italy) where its natural regeneration was strictly confined under mother plants canopy. Healthy plants (DCP), plants at incipient senescence (SCP) and dead plants (DP) were distinguished according to vitality and canopy status. Living plants were also characterized in relation to leaf C and N isotope composition. Regeneration pattern (seedlings and saplings abundance) was…
Revisiting “Schumacker”: Source, Residence and Citizenship in the ECJ Case Law on Direct Taxation
2013
ECJ case law on direct taxation has been very important in the development of the international dimension of direct tax systems of EU Member States. Through the application of the non-discrimination principle and the requirements of the fundamental freedoms, some of the basic structures of the implementation of income tax systems have been revised to accommodate to the needs of the single market. However, the requirements of the EU single market are fundamentally incompatible with the assumptions that have served to build the criteria under which modern income tax systems have been developed (worldwide income taxation, residence vs source, unlimited vs limited tax liability, credit vs exemp…
The nationality of companies in French law
2012
The development of international economic relations and the construction of an integrated European area, both from an economic and a political point of view, has revived the debate on the nationality of trading companies. The question is not so much whether trading companies have a nationality on an equal footing with natural persons – solutions have long been accepted by international doctrine and jurisprudence – but rather to determine how this notion has evolved and adapted to the constraints on the one hand, of a globalized market economy and, on the other hand, of European Union law which overturns the traditionally accepted solutions of nationality of trading companies into the legal …
Estonian e-Residency: a model for Europe
2020
This paper aims to examine one of the main implications of freedom of establishment: since it is possible to transfer a company abroad effortlessly, in fact, governments are adopting various strategies to make themselves more attractive. These are based on two main directives: first, a convenient tax system, as in Malta, on the other side technology, as proposed in Estonia. These countries’ strategy is radically different: Malta offers an extremely profitable tax system, while Estonia, on the other side, is the only nation in Europe where the optimal use of technology and its potential allows the consolidation and implementation of a totally digital system, whose advantages outweigh those o…
